The Moulin Rouge first opened during the Belle Époque and is located in the eighteenth arrondissement of Paris, in the Pigalle district, at the foot of Montmartre. It first opened its doors in 1889, during the celebration of the first centenary of the French Revolution at the same time the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated. The cabaret housed a space for exhibitions in its garden and even a giant elephant from the World Expo. Known worldwide for its risqué shows, especially the Can-Can, the Moulin Rouge quickly became the place to go for the Parisian fashionable set attracting an audience consisting of all types o revellers, princes, bourgeois, artists, writers and the working classes.
The painter Toulouse-Lautrec immortalized the unique atmosphere of time in his posters with his great muse the vedette, L Goulue. 600,000 people a year attend the shows while enjoying a gourmet dinner. The show includes 100 artists, 60 dancers, 1,000 costumes of sequins, feathers and rhinestones, 800 pairs of shoes, a tank with 40 tons of water and even 5 pythons.
